Details:
Beaune is the logical place to stay during a longer wine pilgrimage to the Cote d’Or and is actually the most visited city in Burgundy. It contains the headquarters of many well-respected Burgundy wine dealers in addition to grand historic sites and gourmet restaurants.
The Hundred Years War had recently been brought to a close but marauding bands, pillaging and destroying, contiued to provoke misery and famine throughout France. Beaune had particulalry suffered from these crimes and was declared destitute. In 1443 Nicolas Rolin and his wife, Guigone de Salins, chancellor of Burgundy to Duke Philip the Good, built the Hotel de Dieu as a hospital for the poor and needy. It is one of the finest examples of French fifteenth-century architecture and is now Beaune’s finest museum with its superb multi-colored Burgundian roof tiles. It now also houses the Museum of Wine of Burgundy.
White Wine: Very few of the wines from this area are white, but they are some of the finest examples of dry white wine produced in the world and are considered a benchmark for winemakers everywhere. Here the primary difference is the location of the vineyards, i.e. the soil and the slope of the land, making the difference between a Village wine and a Grand Cru wine. Below is a list of the most important villages and vineyards in the Cote de Beaune that produce white wines: |
| Village | Premier Cru | Grand Cru |
Aloxe-Corton
Beaune Meursult
Puligny-Montrachet
Chassagne-Montrachet |
Clos des Mouches Les Perrieres Les Combettes Les Ruchottes |
Corton-Charlemagne
Montrachet* Montrachet* |
|
* Corton-Charlemagne – there is a sweet story associated with this white wine. Emperor Charlelmagne’s wife demanded that the Emperor start producing the white wine for the red Corton kept staining his imperial bead and clothing! * The vineyards of Batard-Montrachet and Montrachet overlap between the villages of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. * Montrachet is a small vineyard with 15 owners that produces perhaps the best dry white wine in the world. |
