Canal St-Martin
canal St-Martin is a pleasant tree-line canal crossed by iron footbridges
and locks and some upscale bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques
along its banks. By the side of one of these footbridges is the
Hotel du Nord made famous by Marcel Carneís classic film, 'Hotel
du Nord'. The Hotel is now a lively bar used for blues and comedy
evenings, sometimes in English.
Place de la Republique
Place de la Republique is a large square at the meeting place
of three arrondissements, 3rd, 10th and 11th and several avenues.
Its central sculpture, Morice's 'La Republique' , glorifies France's
many revolutionary struggles; rather ironically the square was
vastly enlarged in the mid-19th century by Haussmann to minimize
revolutionary activity in this part of the city.
Musee des Arts et Metiers
Museum of Science and Technology issSituated to the north of
the 3rd arrondissements, this museum contains machines and models
relating to great inventions from 1500. It has recently been completely
restored and the description besides each exhibit is now both
in French and English.

Ideally situated when arriving by Eurostar being no more than five minutes' walk from the Gare du Nord (really!). Also only a five minute walk to the Gare de l'Est in the other direction. Room was good with shower room en-suite (including hair drier) and air conditioning. Typical continental breakfast with boiled eggs if you wanted them. Staff were helpful and mostly spoke English but it was useful that we can speak some French. Any future time we visit Paris we would definitely stay here. - Pitts John (Jul 23, 2005)
