Montmartre Wine Promenades

Facts:

Montmartre

Since Gallo-Roman times Montmartre was a small village covered with vineyards at the top of the hill until the 19th century, when it was absorbed by Paris, and became one of the strongholds for intellectuals and artists. Nearby is the famous Place du Tertre, the square surrounded by cafes where artists and intellectuals would meet. Just before World War I many artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Utrillo and Apollinaire lived nearby, but it then became rather expensive and a move was made by many artists to Montparnasse.

FAQs

I wanted to tell you that the "Montmartre Evening Package" that you set up was really exceptional.

We arrived at the "Les Chais de Montmartre" wine shop and discovered we were the only guests for the evening. The proprietor wasn't the least bit concerned and had a large platter of bread, meats, cheeses, dried fruits, etc. prepared for us. He sat down with a map of the regions of France and asked about our interests and tastes and then made some recommendations for the wines to be enjoyed. He then brought the bottles and glasses and sat with us while explaining the wines and particulars. He then gave us a few minutes to enjoy our wines, browse through his shop, and made sure we knew where to go next. We purchased a couple bottles while there. We left a few minutes after 8:00

"A La Pomponnette" was a very nice little restaurant. The proprietress met us at the door and took us to a great table in the back room. My wife has some food allergies, which she explained to the proprietress, who in turn made some recommendations and took care of the order. The food was wonderful and the wine was great. The restaurant has apparently been in business for over 100 years! We left around 11:00

We walked on up the hill and on to "Au Lapin Agile" The manager was expecting us and once the song being sung was completed, he took us in and sat us down on a bench right in front of the singer (another "little sparrow" who sang a lot of Edith Piaff songs and played the accordion). Two older guys then came up and one played the piano while the other led everyone in a number of songs -- all in French and nearly everyone in the room seemed to know all the words. Nice way to end the evening. We left around 12:30 or so and walked back down the hill to the Metro by Moulin Rouge

We couldn't have asked for anything better, Larry. Thank you, AA

Montmartre Wine Promenades

Discover French wines right where the French themselves do it and at the same time experience the historic districts of Paris and its famous buildings. We start our tasting probably with a white wine at a small wine bar opened in 1904 on a sweet little square with centenary chestnut trees and next to a typically "Montmartre" staircase. We then walk past The Lapin Agile, a pink house Cabaret where Picasso, Modigliani, writers and musicians used to go. Past the Montmartre vineyards and through one of the narrowest paths in Paris arriving in front of the Moulin de la Galette illustrated in so many of the most famous impressionist paintings from the turn of the century plus French singer Dalida's old Montmartrian style house with a note from her friends "Friends from Montmartre will always remember you".

We'll see Picasso's old workshop where he painted the famous "Demoiselles d'Avignon" before arriving to out 2nd tasting which sites in the edge of the hill under the shade of trees and view over the rooftops of Paris. On past the grocery store frequented by Amelie Poulin as well as one of the most unique art cinemas in Paris before ending at a most unusual place for wine where only the locals know about or could even find it. Here you can also order a plate of meats and cheese( not included in the cost) or buy a bottle or 2 to take home.

Along the way our wine expert teach you about how to taste wine, understand labels, give an overview of the regions and show you one of the most interesting parts of Paris. At the end you are free to return to the top of the Hill of Montmartre and visit the Places du Tertre and Sacre Coeur.
